Texas Furry Fiesta 2017 Wrap Up

Thursday, March 30, 2017 Uncategorized

I want to thank all our fuzzy friends and family for coming out this past weekend, our last convention at the Dallas Hotel Intercontinental. Throughout the event, the hotel staff expressed their sadness to see us go. We’ll miss them too, and remember fondly our four years there.

Texas Furry Fiesta grew in 2017 to 3,325 attendees who all came together to donate $23,400+ to our charity, the Center for Animal Research and Education (CARE). That’s a strong attendance growth number, up 18%. More important to us is that charity number, up over 25% from any previous year. We’re always working on new routes to raise money for our extended family, with a philosophy that if we can create a fun experience that also raises money for CARE, everyone wins. Thank you for participating in one of our many charitable events, or donating outright at the table.

Numbers aside, what conventions are really about are experiences and people. The physical social nexus our 150+ staffers create offers an opportunity for our community to converge, converse, and create, and we’re really proud of the thing we called Texas Furry Fiesta 2017. We had lots and lots of positive feedback, as well as helpful critical feedback from folks who want to make our 2018 run even better. I’m super proud of what we did here, and I hope you had a great experience.

In my final message to you as Chair, I personally want to express what an amazing five years it’s been. We started with less than 50 staffers in the Crown Plaza, and ended up so big that our shiny new hotel was just utterly overrun with furballs – and now we’re moving on to the (deep breath) Hyatt Regency Dallas at Reunion. Sable will provide a bird’s eye view of leadership from here on in (SQUAWK!), and I feel like we’re in good paws, or claws, or feathers.

Thank you to our staff for an outstanding performance, to our performers for spreading joy by sharing your talents, and to our community for creating a magical set of days, something I’ll never forget. TFF, like most furry conventions, is nearly a 100% volunteer-powered. Our staffers give their time and energy, and the only pay they get back is knowing that we did good work here. Speaking for myself, I’ve never questioned why I did what I did, or why I gave so much for “free”. Your smiles and thanks have always made the experience of guiding a convention valuable, and you’ve all given my life a great sense of purpose.

I look forward to continuing as part of the staff for 2018, and being part of the ongoing story that is Texas Furry Fiesta.

Thank you.
